A Journey in to the Heart of the White Mountains Aboard the Conway Scenic Railroad.

As someone who has spent years exploring New England on camera, I’ve discovered that the most unforgettable experiences for me personally, blend rich history, breathtaking scenery, and a healthy dose of nostalgia. The new Crawford to North Conway and Return excursion on the Conway Scenic Railroad offers all of that — and more. Recently, I had the privilege of boarding at Crawford Notch Station, and from the moment the whistle blew, I knew I was stepping into a timeless New Hampshire adventure.

A Ride Through Railroad History

The story of the Conway Scenic Railroad begins in the late 1800s, when rail travel transformed the rugged White Mountains into a celebrated destination. In those days, trains brought vacationers from Boston and New York, delivering them to grand hotels like the Crawford House and the Mount Washington Hotel. The rail lines were lifelines for logging operations and resorts alike, carving their way through some of the most challenging terrain in New England.

Today’s Crawford to North Conway route follows the same storied tracks, carrying passengers past the legendary Willey Brook Bridge and Frankenstein Trestle — marvels of 19th-century engineering that remain awe-inspiring today. Each mile traveled is steeped in history, making this more than just a train ride; it’s a moving museum.

Aboard a Classic Train

Your journey unfolds aboard a 1950s-era diesel-hauled streamlined passenger train. These classic coaches were built in the golden age of post–World War II rail travel, when wide windows and plush seating encouraged passengers to savor the ride. The gentle sway, the hum of the engine, and the panoramic views combine to create an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and deeply connected to the past. The cars you ride on as described to me by Conway Scenic Railroad’s Director of Marketing Brian Solomon, are “Heritage Railroad Cars” and should be enjoyed as such. Although at the time these cars were new, they were considered a somewhat exclusive and luxurious method of transportation, they were not outfitted with amenities we demand today, like air conditioning. I suggest passengers take this into account when you book your excursion and remember you are not just paying for a train ticket; you are buying an experience of being transported back to a different time, and that is one example of what makes this unique.

The Scenic Route

Departing from Crawford at 11 a.m., the train glides through one of the most dramatic mountain-passes in New England. Towering cliffs, lush forests, and cascading waterfalls surround you. The train crosses high trestles, including the famed Frankenstein Trestle Bridge, offering stunning views of the Saco River far below. In summer, the hillsides are a tapestry of green; in autumn, they explode into a riot of reds, golds, and oranges — a photographer’s dream.
Along the way, an extremely knowledgeable Narrator shares fascinating insights into the region’s history, geology, and railroad lore. This is more than sightseeing; it’s a deeper connection to the landscape and the stories that shaped it. Be sure to stop by the Narrator’s seat during or after your journey to ask them any questions you like. They are filled with information and happy to share it with enthusiastic riders of all ages.

Arriving in North Conway

At approximately 1 p.m., the train arrives at the historic North Conway Depot, a Victorian-era landmark in the heart of the village. Step off the train and explore:

  • Railroad Museum – Located right in the Conway Scenic Railroad Depot, this is home to antique lanterns, restored equipment, and exhibits chronicling the region’s railroading past.
  • Brass Whistle Gift Shop – Also in the Depot, a treasure trove of unique souvenirs, books, and railway memorabilia.
  • North Conway Village – Don’t wander too far, or you will miss your return train to Crawford, but when you do have the opportunity, the village, just across the green offers several quaint boutiques, cafe’s and ice cream shops.

Flexible Travel Options

  • Avoid the Village Traffic: This is a BIG ONE! Boarding at Crawford saves you from navigating summer congestion in downtown North Conway.
  • Two Mountaineer Departures: Morning and afternoon departures let you plan your trip around meals and activities.

Travel Tips for Every Season

  • Spring: Early spring in the White Mountains can still feel wintry, so dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes — snowmelt can make paths damp. This is a quiet season with fewer crowds, making it perfect for a peaceful ride. Watch for early wildflowers dotting the valley floors and keep an eye out for wildlife emerging from winter.
  • Summer: Bring a light jacket — mountain breezes can be crisp even in July. The lush green scenery makes for stunning photography, and clear skies provide sweeping views from the trestles.
  • Autumn: Book early for peak foliage season; this is one of the most sought-after leaf-peeping rides in New England. Bright reds, golds, and oranges frame the route, making this the ultimate season for photographers.
  • Winter: Bundle up for a magical ride through snow-covered landscapes. While schedules may vary, winter excursions offer a serene and sparkling view of the mountains. Hot beverages and cozy layers will make the experience even more enjoyable.
  • Photography: The train offers open views from nearly every seat, so keep your camera ready for shots of bridges, cliffs, and sweeping mountain landscapes.
